Chonnam National University (CNU) has been building a ‘Democracy Road’ on Yongbong campus to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising this year. The trail starting from the Main Gate will connect 11 memorial sites and monuments including Martyr Park Seung-hee’s Memorial Stone and Martyr Yun Sang-won’s Statue. CNU President Jeong Byung-seok mentioned the trail’s goal during his speech at the groundbreaking ceremony for the trail on December 4, 2019. He said, “We decided to make this road to honor the spirit of the people who dedicated their life for democracy, human rights and justice. The CNU Democracy Road will become an educational space for democracy and a path to the future where democratic citizens and students walk together. It will also be a path of harmony to settle conflict and discrimination and serve as a newly constructed bridge between Korea’s democracy and the world beyond Asia.” This trail currently under construction is planned for completion by early May and will be opened to the public on the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising.
