The CNU Action Alliance to support Myanmar’s pro-democracy protest movement was launched on April 1. Nine internal and external organizations of CNU came together at the 5∙18 Square on Yongbong campus to form the consortium to protest the military coup of Myanmar’s government, as well as to call for an end to the violence and slaughter of the people of Myanmar military and police forces. Reminiscent of the May 18 Democratic Uprising in 1980, the situation in Myanmar moved the people of Gwangju and inspired a wave of solidarity. “The violence against Myanmar’s democratic citizens is a destruction of human rights and values itself, and a serious threat to the spirit of democracy and peace,” the Action Alliance stated, strongly condemning the military coup and supporting Myanmar’s citizens’ noble struggle to restore democracy. In addition, the CNU May 18 Research Institute also demanded the restoration of democracy in Myanmar. After the initiation ceremony, participants expressed their solidarity and support for Myanmar’s people by singing the song ”March for the Beloved,” which represents the May 18 Democratization movement. They also uploaded messages of encouragement on social media.
